The Democratic Republic of the Congo,
also referred to as DRC, RDC, DR Congo or formerly as Congo Free State, Belgian Congo,
Congo-Leopoldville, Congo-Kinshasa, and formerly Zaire, is a nation in Central Africa
and the third largest country on the continent. It borders the Central African Republic
and Sudan on the north, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania on the east, Zambia and
Angola on the south, and the Republic of the Congo on the west. The country enjoys
access to the sea through a narrow forty kilometre stretch, following the Congo river
into the Gulf of Guinea. The name "Congo" (meaning "hunter") is coined after the Kongo
ethnic group, living in the lower Congo river area.
As many as 250 ethnic groups have been distinguished and named. The most numerous people
are the Kongo, Luba, and Mongo. Although 700 local languages and dialects are spoken, the
linguistic variety is bridged both by the use of French and the intermediary languages
Kikongo, Tshiluba, Swahili, and Lingala.

Democratic
Republic of Congo Telecommunications Market Overview Report
DRC is a mineral-rich country that is recovering from civil strife and many years of
pillage by its former leaders which has accounted for the low level of development of its
telecommunications and other infrastructure. While the traditional fixed-line network has
deteriorated to almost non-existence, mobile telephony has experienced excellent growth.
Wireless technologies serve as a replacement of the obsolete fixed network infrastructure
and public payphones. National teledensity remains extremely low, creating enormous
potential for the provision of basic services. There is also strong demand for Internet
service which has been hampered by the underdeveloped telecoms infrastructure.
Democratic Rep. of Congo e-Commerce Background
October 12, 2008
The development of electronic commerce (e-commerce) in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo has been slow. Although it is not a new phenomenon to African business,
having been in existence for a number of years now, the “e-revolution “ seems
to be taking slightly longer than anticipated to sink its roots in DRC.
