Latin American Telecommunications, Mobiles and Broadband
Overview This report covers trends and developments in telecommunications,
mobile, Internet, broadband, pay TV, and converging media. Countries included are:
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic,
Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua,
Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela, and several small
Caribbean countries. Read the complete Executive Summary.
Latin American Broadband and Internet Market
Report Broadband penetration in Latin America and the Caribbean was about
4.9% in early 2009, well below the world average of 6.1%. The slow uptake of broadband
in the region can be attributed to several factors. Competition has been increasing and
prices have been dropping in most countries. Given the region's general economic indicators,
there remains ample space for expansion. Although the situation varies considerably from
country to country, the region as a whole should be a fertile ground for broadband
investment. Latin America was the world's fastest-growing broadband market in the
fourth quarter of 2008. See details in the Executive Summary.
Latin American Convergence, Pay TV and Digital Media Market
Report Convergence offers promising prospects in Latin America and the
Caribbean, a continent with about 577 million people, a soaring broadband sector, low
teledensity, relatively high TV penetration, and a growing VoIP market. One of the
consequences of triple play is the start of competition between cable TV and telecom
operators. This is, of course, beneficial for customers, who have a greater choice
between service providers. But in many countries, issues of market balance and fear
of losing market share to competition have led to lengthy regulatory battles, involving
cable TV companies, telecom operators, and regulatory authorities. Further details in the Executive Summary.
