Cape Verde - officially the Republic of
Cabo Verde - is an island country covering an archipelago of ten volcanic islands
in the central Atlantic Ocean. It is located 570 kilometres (350 miles) off the
coast of Western Africa, with a land area of about 4,033 square kilometres. Three
of the islands (Sal, Boa Vista and Maio) are fairly flat, sandy and dry; the others
are rockier and with more vegetation. Cape Verde’s population is mostly creole;
its capital city Praia accounts for a quarter of the country’s population. Nearly
38% live in rural areas according to the 2010 Cape Verdean census. The literacy
rate is around 85%. Politically, the country is a very stable democracy. It is notable
its economic growth and improvement in living conditions despite a lack
of natural resources.
