90% of all subscriber connections. The subscriber base is still growing at around 30% per

home to some of the fastest growing fixed-line markets in the world. The continent still
has some of the world's lowest penetration rates in both market sectors. This annual
report offers a wealth of information on telecommunications infrastructure in 38 African
countries, including traditional fixed-line networks, Wireless Local Loop (WLL) systems
as well as national and international fibre. See table of content and summary.

Operators
Mobile phones represent more than 90% of all telephone lines in Africa. Market
penetration is expected to pass the 50% mark in 2010. Several individual markets
are still growing at more than 100% per year and stand at only single-digit penetration
rates. Africa's most advanced markets have passed the 100% penetration mark. This
annual report offers a wealth of information on the mobile communications and mobile
data markets in 38 African countries. See summary and table of contents.
African Telecommunications Information by Country
Algeria Telecoms
and Mobile Broadband Market Report
With a mobile penetration of close to 90% and a fixed-line penetration of around 10%
in early 2010, Algeria has one of the highest teledensities in Africa. Its relatively
well developed infrastructure includes a national fibre backbone and one of Africa's
first fibre-to-the-home (FttH) deployments. See the executive summary.
Angola Telecoms
and Mobile Broadband Market Report
Angola is the second-largest producer of oil in sub-Saharan Africa, and the rise
of oil prices has led to double-digit GDP growth in recent years. However, the
global economic crisis has affected the country, and GDP is forecast to grow more
in line with the African average going forward. With peace restored in 2002 after
decades of civil war, foreign investment has multiplied and the mobile market has
soared despite a continued duopoly between Unitel and Angola Telecom's Movicel.
Benin
Telecoms and Mobile Internet Market Forecasts
Although the Internet has been available in Benin since 1995, it is used by only
a small percentage of the population. Development of the sector has been hampered
by the poor fixed-line network and the high cost of international connectivity.
Mobile data services are available, but 3G mobile broadband services have not yet
been introduced. The arrival of a second international submarine fibre optic cable
to compete with the SAT-3/WASC cable from 2011 is expected to lead to drastic
reductions in the cost of international bandwidth.
Botswana
Telecoms and Mobile Internet Market Report
Botswana is one of Africa's wealthiest nations with a thriving economy mainly based
on diamond mining and tourism. Regulatory reform has turned the country into one
of the most liberalised telecommunications markets in the region, including a
service-neutral licensing regime which takes into account the increasing convergence
of technologies and services.
