NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was established on April 4, 1949 and its greatest
responsibility is ensuring the collective defence and keeping the people safe in the member countries.
The original 12 founding members were the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Canada, Denmark,
France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Portugal.
