Internet Broadband Metrics

Dear Reader,
Sorry for the long silence, corresponding to a sabbatical leave of the writer. But here I am, once again, with new and better Internet World Stats. A lot of things have happened during 2013 in the Internet. Growth in use of tablets and smartphones for access to the Internet has been phenomenal. Likewise Internet broadband has increased in all the world, making possible the surge in Internet videos, VoIP, games, smartphone applications, and so forth.

In our opinion, today it is not only the number of users in each country that is of importance, now you have to consider the Quality of Internet access at each location. For this reason, we have added a new metric to the Internet World Stats website: broadband download speeds, measured in Mbps (megabits per second). This figure is important, as we explain below, and you can see it for many of the world countries at the regional pages on the IWS website.

Please continue reading for further information and enjoy this new issue # 80 of the IWS Newsletter.

What is Broadband Internet

The term broadband has several meanings. Here we refer to Broadband Internet, or high speed Internet. Commonly an access of more than 256 Kilobits per second (256 Kbps) is considered Broadband Internet. You can find out the speed of your own Internet access using a speed test. Here is the link to one of the most popular free tools for performing an Internet Speed Test.

Ookla is the global leader in broadband speed testing and web-based network diagnostic applications. Established in 2006, Ookla's software and methodologies are used world-wide by the broadband industry for testing and measurements. They operate the Speedtest since 2007 and with the data collected they publish the Net Index showing average Internet speed for cities, regions, countries and even for the entire world.

Ookla also offers another free tool for determining the quality of your own broadband Internet connection. The tool also shows packet loss, ping and jitter values, and gives a grade to your connection for overall quality. Try the Ping Test and find out how well your Internet access is performing.
