Miniwatts Marketing Group

Dear Reader,
Hello everyone and a warm welcome to all the new subscribers. For those of you that do not know, the Miniwatts Marketing Group is the organization behind the Internet World Stats website and the IWS Newsletter. The writer, that's me, is the CEO and the person responsible for all the market research, the statistics, the websites, and all the content that we publish online since April 13, 2001. That was the day when we registered our first domain.

A lot of things have happened during the ten (10) years of our activity in the web. First of all, back in year 2000, when we started counting Internet users, there were only 361 million users in the world. Today there are over 2,100 million Internet users. That is an increase of approximately 482 % in just one decade. This is simply amazing, like all the things related to the Internet.

The Internet is something big and part of our daily life. The web is here to stay. Web 1.0 led to Web 2.0 and now to the so called Social Web. It is all part of the Semantic Web, and what we could call collective intelligence. All this is discussed below, and we invite you to a very interesting seminar where all these developments are explained and analyzed. So, without further delay, please read on and enjoy your personal IWS Newsletter.

Facebook Usage in the United States

In the previous Newsletter we showed The Facebook Big Picture and published at the IWS website the current number of Facebook subscribers in all the world, country by country. Today we have for you information about the number of Facebook users in the USA, state by state. The old statistics for August, 2010 remain on the web page for comparison purposes. Below them, the new, latest stats for March, 2011 have been added. It is interesting to see the variations in Facebook users for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Please take note that the penetration rate for the D.C. is special, 249.4 % is not a mistake. Many people work in Washington D.C. but are residents of another state. Statistics are tricky sometimes. Today FB users have reached 672 million in the world. The top five countries are: United States with 150.2 million (down 4.7 million), Indonesia with 35.8 million, the UK with 29.1 million, Turkey with 26.9 million and Mexico with 24.9 million.

Do keep in mind that Facebook is a product and as such it has a life cycle. Right now FB is in the growth period. But you have to be watching closely to see when this phase stops and the slope of the curve changes. Anyway, Facebook statistics change all the time, with people leaving and new people subscribing.

2010 Internet World Stats

We are validating all the usage data, country by country. This is necessary to avoid errors and confusions. We consider these stats very special because they will show the ten year growth of the Internet (2000 - 2010) and will be a reference for the future. For now, you can get a peak at the partial report, by geographic regions. 2010 Internet Usage - Preliminary Results Remember, these figures are subject to change. You can check periodically for the updates.

From the Semantic Web to the Social Network

The Semantic Web is a web of data that enables machines to understand the semantics, or meaning, of information on the World Wide Web. It extends the network of hyperlinked human-readable web pages by inserting machine-readable metadata about pages and how they are related to each other, enabling automated agents to access the Web more intelligently and perform tasks on behalf of users. The term was first used by Tim Berners-Lee.

The Social Web can be described as people getting connected by interlinking and interacting in written conversational contents, sharing news, photos, etc. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, and many others are good examples. Here you can see and compare features of the
Top Ten Social Networks . Why they shown up and grow can be better understood seeing this video presentation of Tom Gruber entitled Where the Social Web meets the Semantic Web , from the 5th International Semantic Web Conference. Here he explains the concept of collective intelligence. This video is long, but it is worth your time. I recommend it.

See you next week with some more original stats for you.

Best personal regards,

Enrique de Argaez, CEO
