Happy Holidays 2005

Table of Contents

Editorial

The year is quickly coming to an end, and it is time again to enjoy the Holidays. 2005 was a good year for the Internet. Usage increased everywhere and broadband access clearly demonstrated its popularity worldwide.

We are anxiously expecting 2005 year end stats in order to verify and document the new worldwide Internet usage total. The figure expected is in the neighborhood of one billion persons.

For 2006 the general opinion of the experts is that video presentations will be the star in Internet. It seems that everybody is getting ready to include video and audio into their Internet pages. It will be interesting to see how well the web sites, blogs and newsletters will handle video, and how the Internet becomes another channel for personal entertainment with Web Movies and Web TV.

We wish all our readers happy holidays and all the best for the coming year.

Internet Search Statistics
Internet Searches continue to grow. Surfers performed 5.1 billion search queries in October 2005, 15 percent more than in June. Yahoo accounted for 21.8 percent, followed by MSN with 11.3 percent and AOL with 7.2 percent. As for Ask Jeeves, activity almost doubled, having grown from 75.81 million searches in June/05 to 133.93 million in October/05, or 2.6 percent of all searches.

Breakdown of search activity shows Image searches reached 328.28 million in October; and shopping searches increased to 77.27 million. For further information, see Nielsen//NetRatings (pdf).

New Internet Search Resources
Windows Live Local is Microsoft's new map site - it was previously called Virtual Earth - and it's designed to compete with Google's map service, called Google Local. Like Google Local, Windows Live Local lets you click and drag the map around with your mouse, get driving directions, and see map and satellite views. Microsoft's satellite images are higher resolution so you can zoom in much closer. Google, however, has better international coverage.

Google has developed a new search tool for finding and viewing videos called
Google Videos. It offers viewers a way to see material from archived TV programs, educational videos, personal productions and more. Just type in your search term, and Google Videos will search the closed captioning and text descriptions of all the videos in their archive for relevant results. To play the videos (broadband is recommended), simply press the small triangle "play" icon and enjoy free videos at Google Videos.

Flash video on web sites is growing at a much faster rate than Flash audio ever did and a lot of big players are already starting to use it, see the Macromedia
Flash Video Gallery.

Get the software to make your own audio and video recordings for your web pages here: The Webmaster Media Maker . Get this bargain today and be a winner in 2006.
