Tanzania, officially The United
Republic of Tanzania, is a nation in central East Africa bordered by Kenya and Uganda
to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west,
and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south. Tanzania’s eastern borders lie
on the Indian Ocean. The name Tanzania comes from Tanganyika and Zanzibar. These
two states united in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar,
which later the same year was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania. The official
capital of Tanzania is Dodoma, being Dar es Salaam the principal commercial
city of Tanzania and the de-facto seat of most government institutions. It is also
the major seaport for the country and its landlocked neighbours.

Growing
Internet Use and ICT in Tanzania
28 May 2010
Tanzania has two fixed-line operators (TTCL and Zantel) and seven operational mobile
networks, with five additional players licensed under a new converged regulatory regime.
With four major operators (Vodacom, Zain, Tigo and Zantel) the mobile market is expected
to break the 50% penetration barrier during 2010, but subscriber growth is expected to
slow to 20%. At the same time, the average revenue per user (ARPU) continues to fall.
At the moment the cost of a brand new personal computer
vacillates between a low of $5 million and a high of up to $12
million, depending on the brand of the machine. This year
government reduced the import duty on computer hardware from 15
percent to 5 percent, a happening Nkala and other experts in the
field, hoped would lead to computers becoming considerably
cheaper and easier to acquire.
Some cafés like the Quick n’ Easy Internet Cafe
company, which has three well-run and popular outlets in Harare,
have designed customer friendly packages that allow subscribers
to become members. Members pay subscriptions of 10 hours or more
in advance and they then enjoy special discount rates and more
surfing time.
Tanzania Telecommunications Reports:
Tanzania Telecommunications,
Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband Report
Tanzania’s economy has been showing solid growth rates of between 5% and 8% every
year since 2000. The International Monetary Fund predicts only a moderate decline of GDP
growth to 5% in 2009 as a result of the global economic crisis, before 7% and more will
be achieved again from 2011 onwards. Mining and tourism are main industry sectors. However,
the country continues to suffer from underdeveloped infrastructure, including roads,
railways, electricity and telecommunications.

Tanzania e-Commerce Background
May 28, 2010
The landing of the first fibre optic international submarine cables in the country
in 2009 and 2010 is set to revolutionise the market which up to that point completely
depended on expensive satellite connections. In parallel, the government has embarked
on a national fibre backbone rollout to connect population centres around the country.
However, the cost of international Internet bandwidth has so far not come down by as
much and not as quickly as expected.
