of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name after becoming independent within
the British Commonwealth on 30 September 1966. It is bordered by South Africa to

Telecom Market - Overview and Statistics
Botswana is one of the continent’s wealthiest nations with a thriving economy
mainly based on diamond exploitation and tourism. Major steps were taken in 2006
towards full liberalisation of the already competitive telecommunications sector.
Mobile penetration has passed the 50% mark which is more than twice the African
average, while the government-owned national operator BTC has seen a continued
decline in the number fixed-line connections despite the introduction of
broadband services. The government is in the process of privatising BTC which,
through a new service-neutral licence, is now also enabled to compete in the
mobile sector.Read

Botswana Economy Background
October 30, 2015
Since independence in 1966, Botswana has maintained the highest level of economic
growth in Africa, one of the highest in the world. Botswana is the second largest
producer of diamonds in the world, and is number one in terms of gemstones. The
Government of Botswana went into partnership with DeBeers in 1967 to extract and
market these diamonds. As a result, the country has very strict laws regarding
it’s number one natural resource. Diamonds are mined only by "Debswana", the
company formed by the partnership. No individual is allowed to mine, or even possess,
an uncut diamond. Therefore, the issue of "conflict diamonds", a problem in certain
other parts of Africa, has never been an issue in Botswana.
Botswana’s second greatest natural resource is the reason why most people
visit this country - the amazing wildlife. Sometimes referred to as Africa’s
last Eden, Botswana boasts an amazing variety of habitats, supporting a huge
population of truly "wild" animals. Botswana now has many camps and lodges in the
national parks and in private wildlife management areas, dispersed over a very
large area enabling camp owners to maintain true wilderness conditions. Many camps
are accessible by light aircraft only. They vary from rugged, to 5-star luxury.
Prices vary by season, and from camp to camp. Prices go up according to comfort
level and exclusivity. High season is normally from May to October, but there is
plenty of game to see any time of the year if you know the right places to visit.
