The Solomon Islands - is a nation in Melanesia, east of Papau New Guinea, consisting of nearly one thousand islands. They cover a land mass of approximately 28,400 square kilometres (10,965 sq mi). The capital is Honiara, located on the island of Guadalcanal.

The Solomon Islands are believed to have been inhabited by Melanesian people for thousands of years. The United Kingdom established a protectorate over the Solomon Islands in the 1890s. Some of the most bitter fighting of World War II occurred in the Solomon Islands campaign of 1942–45, including the Battle of Guadalcanal.

Self-government was achieved in 1976 and independence two years later. The country remains a Commonwealth Realm. Since 1998 ethnic violence, government misconduct and crime have undermined stability and civil society. In June 2003 an Australian-led multinational force, the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI), arrived to restore peace and disarm ethnic militias.

The economy relies heavily on timber exports, which are vulnerable to price fluctuations. Economic hopes have been pinned on the resumption of palm oil production and gold mining.

Solomon Islands Telecommunications Reports

Solomon Island Telecoms Market Overview and Statistics Report
Communications has always been difficult in the Solomon Islands, but with the country in a state of civil war since mid-2000, many telecommunications facilities were totally destroyed and consequently all developments of telecom facilities were placed on hold. By early 2006, restoration of telecommunications was progressing slowly, hampered by inadequate funding. All telecom services are provided by Solomon Telekom, which had a monopoly status until mid-2003.

Teledensity has fallen from its peak of almost 2% in 1999 to 1.4% in 2005. However, a new Internet-based rural communications system, PFnet, is helping to bridge the digital divide. In July 2006 the government was planning a review of Solomon Telecom’s monopoly status. In January 2007 the Solomon Island’s incumbent telco, Solomon Telekom, reacted to recent moves made by the government to open up the telecommunications market to competition.
