Peru Internet Usage and Broadband:

Peru Broadband and Broadcasting - Market Overview, Statistics and Forecasts
Internet user penetration in Peru is considerably higher than average for Latin America, a remarkable achievement compared with Peru’s other economic indicators. The success of the Internet in Peru is primarily due to the mushrooming of cheap public Internet facilities known as cabinas publicas. In fact, Peru is a world leader in terms of users who access the Internet in public places. The Peruvian government is aiming to increase broadband penetration from 2% to more than 3% by 2011. Several government-subsidised broadband projects (FITEL) are underway or up for tender using the reverse bid mechanism. Accompanied by market statistics and analyses, this report provides an overview of the Internet, broadband, and pay-TV markets in Peru, as well as developments in convergence strategies. Peru - Key Statistics, Telecom Market and Regulatory Overviews
The Peruvian telecom market was liberalised in 1998, and the country enjoys free competition in all telecom sectors. Despite liberalisation, telecommunications are largely in the hands of one single company, Telefónica del Perú, which still has a near monopoly in the local fixed-line market and also dominates the mobile sector. This situation has stifled growth and, at around 7%, fixed-line teledensity is among the lowest in South America. Excessively high interconnection rates have been blamed for this state of affairs. At 16% in early 2005, Peruvian mobile penetration is also low for Latin America. On the positive side, a multicarrier system introduced in 2002 has stimulated long-distance competition, and fixed-to-mobile charges were reduced in 2004 and 2005. More information here

Peru Telecommunications - Fixed Line Market and Infrastructure
Despite liberalisation and the removal of licensing restrictions, the local fixed-line market remains almost a monopoly, with Telefónica del Perú (TdP) still holding 96% of all lines in service. Moreover, Tdp’s main local fixed-line competitor, Comunicaciones Móviles del Perú/BellSouth Peru, was merged with Telefónica Móviles Perú in June 2005 and was renamed Movistar Perú. Long-distance telephony, on the other hand, is enormously competitive, stimulated by the multicarrier system introduced in April 2002. There is no limit to the number of long-distance licensees. Besides TdP, the main long-distance carriers are: IDT Perú, Americatel Perú, Impsat Perú and Telmex Perú. See table of contents.

Peru - Mobile Communications and Mobile Data Market Report
A wave of change began in the Peruvian mobile scenario following Telefonica de Peru acquisition, in October 2004, of BellSouth Peru, which was renamed Comunicaciones Móviles del Perú (CMP). Telefónica asked for governmental approval to merge CMP with Telefónica Móviles Perú. Such a merger raised considerable controversy but was approved in April 2005 and implemented in the following June. The new merged company, named Movistar Perú, now dominates the mobile market with around 66% share. To revitalise competition, the government awarded a fourth mobile licence, in March 2005, to América Móvil. It also imposed substantial duties to expand operations in under-serviced rural areas on both Movistar, as a condition for approving the merger, and on América Móvil. More information on the report

Internet Usage in Peru
Peru’s National Statistics Institute (INEI) released on Thursday the results of a study called "Information and Communications Technology in Households". The study, which was carried out in the first trimester of 2008, revealed that the majority of Peruvians accessed the World Wide Web by going to internet cafes. INEI's study showed that almost 75 percent of the Andean country's residents accessed the Web by going to internet booths, while only 16.9 percent of users had an internet connection in their home. Furthermore, it was reported that only 12.5 percent of Peruvians had access to the Internet at work while just 3.7 percent of the population cold log onto the web at a school. The study revealed that 41.9 percent of Lima had access to the Internet while only 6.2 percent of rural areas could log onto the Web. According to INEI, the number of homes with internet access increased 3.1 percent to 15.5 in the past year. In addition to information on Internet use in Peru, the survey showed the cellular phone penetration rate in the country. The number of cellular phone users in Peru increased 15.6 percent to 51.5 percent in the past year. The use of mobile phones in Lima jumped to 73 percent when compared to last year.
