Chile Telecommunications Reports

Chile - Convergence Broadband and Internet Market Report
Chile has a state-of-the-art telecom infrastructure and regulatory system, and the highest PC and Internet penetration rates in Latin America. The country’s broadband market is a fast growing business, with cable modems growing by around 45% a year and ADSL access by around 108%. Cable modems have traditionally led the broadband market, but in 2004 ADSL lines overtook cable modems. Chile is the regional leader in terms of convergence. In 1999, it was the first Latin American country to witness the deployment of triple play solutions, which combine fixed line, broadband and pay TV services into a single package. Chile is also pioneering the introduction of Broadband Powerline (BPL), which was launched commercially in March 2005 for the first time in the region. Purchase the full report here.

Chile Fixed Line Market and Infrastructure Overview and Statistics
Chile has a state-of-the-art telecom infrastructure and regulatory system. The country’s fixed-line network has been fully digital since 1993. But while Chile’s mobile market continues to flourish, the fixed-line sector remains flat, mostly because the move to mobile solutions has served as an inhibitor to fixed-line uptake. Chilean local telephony has 11 operating companies, however incumbent local telephone operator Telefónica CTC continues to hold around 75% of all lines in service. The long-distance sector is one of the most competitive in Latin America. While CTC leads the local and domestic long-distance markets, Entel is the leader in the international long-distance sector. Entel’s previous owner, Telecom Italia, sold its 54.8% stake in March 2005 to Chilean company Almendral. Get the full report here.

Chile - Key Statistics on Telecom Market and Regulatory Overviews
Chile has one of the region’s most dynamic and promising telecom markets. A high level of maturity has been achieved through investment, competition and innovation. The telecom sector was completely privatised in 1990, and is very open to competition and foreign participation. The country has one of the least-regulated telecom market in the region, with full competition in all areas. Chile was the second country in the region (Mexico was the first) to have free trade agreements with the major western economies. A mobile access fee structure issued by the regulator in January 2004 is gradually reducing fixed-to-mobile interconnection fees by 26.5% over five-year, while a May 2004 Decree is raising the interconnection rates that incumbent fixed-line telco Telefónica CTC charges its competitors by 39.6%. Get the complete report here.

Chile - Mobile Market Overview and Statistics
Chile has one of the highest mobile telephony penetration rates in Latin America: around 60% in early 2005. Mobile subscribers outnumber fixed-line connections by about 7:3. Chile’s mobile industry is one of the most competitive in Latin America, but the number of mobile companies decreased from four to three in January 2005, with the merger of Telefónica Móvil de Chile and BellSouth Chile. The merged company was renamed Movistar Chile in April 2005, leapfrogging Entel to become the mobile market leader. América Móvil entered the Chilean mobile market in August 2005, with the acquisition of Smartcom. The shape of the mobile market is set to change yet again, with the forthcoming auction for spectrum which Movistar has been asked to return within 18 months from its merger.
