Argentina Internet Usage,
Broadband and Telecom Reports
Argentina - Data,
Internet, Broadband and E-Services Report
Argentina’s Internet market is the third largest in Latin
America, and penetration is among the highest in the region.
After a slowdown during the economic recession, Argentina is
growing again in both narrowband and broadband. Traditionally,
cable modem was the more popular medium of broadband access, but
by mid-2003, DSL had consolidated its leadership. See the
executive
summary.
Argentina - Key
Statistics, Regulatory Overview, Telecom Infrastructure and Major
Players
All telecom services in Argentina are completely open to
competition. A single licence for any type of service is required
(either fixed or mobile, wireline or wireless, national or
long-distance, with or without own infrastructure). Full
liberalisation began in November 2000, and lead to an explosion
of new technologies, new services and an influx of new players,
but the economic crisis in 2002 had a devastating effect on the
telecom industry, forcing telcos to freezes on their debt
repayments and investments. The economy picked up in 2003 and
telecommunications grew by around 38% in 2004. The biggest growth
was in mobile telephony (around 68% increase in subscribers). The
Internet also grew apace, with overall users up by 35%, while
broadband subscribers surged by 88%. See more
information here.
Argentina - Mobile
Communications and Broadcasting Report
Following an impressive growth in the late 1990s, the Argentine
mobile market ground down to a halt during the 2001-2002
recession years. Mobile telephony began to recover in mid-2003
and experienced exceptional growth in 2004. Mobile subscribers
are estimated to have grown 68% during 2004, to reach 12.3
million by early 2005. See more
information here.
