Macedonia Telecommunications Market Reports

Macedonia - Telecoms Market - Overview & Statistics report
This report provides an overview of The Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia’s recently liberalised telecom sector, accompanied by relevant statistics and brief profiles of the major operators. Recently enacted legislation has partially implemented the EU’s regulatory framework for communications, setting the scene for competition although the incumbent still dominates. Internet and broadband penetration are both low but are expected to grow due to increased focus on the sector by the incumbent. The mobile market has experienced strong growth and has recently surpassed 50% penetration. Mobile data services are available and digital terrestrial TV trials have been launched.

Macedonia Offers Youth and Elderly with Free Internet Cafés

Skopje, June 12, 2007 - The government plans to open free, state owned internet café’s in the major towns across the country by the end of the year, a government spokesman, Ivica Bocevski, said.

“The aim of the government is to enable access to the internet, mostly to the young people. This will not harm the private sector because the project is targeting people who cannot afford internet anyway,” Bocevski added. The free internet access will be available for young people up to 26 and to women over 62 and men over 64. It will be available in over 20 towns around the country.

Similar free internet café’s function in other EU countries. Most Macedonians seem to approve of the decision. Many complain that internet use is still too expensive for them. “Most young people in the country don’t have access to internet at home and many don’t have it in school either,” said Boris Cocorovski, a student aged 18.

The elderly are however a little confused. Rozeta Stojanovic, aged 65, said she did not really know what the internet meant. “I know it has something to do with computers but I don’t have one at home,” she said. “I don’t understand why it is so important.”

Statistics put Macedonia on the bottom of the list when it comes to internet use in Europe. Only about 20 per cent of the population are internet users. Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal and other countries on the top of the list have around 70 per cent of Internet penetration.
