Maldives - officially the Republic of Maldives, is an island nation consisting of a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean, south of Lakshadweep group of islands of India, about seven hundred kilometers (435 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka. The twenty-six atolls encompass a territory featuring 1,192 islets, roughly two hundred of which are inhabited by people. Following the introduction of Islam in 1153, the islands later became a Portuguese (1558), Dutch (1654), and British (1887) colonial possession. In 1965, Maldives declared its independence from Britain, and in 1968 the Sultanate was replaced by a Republic.

Maldives Telecoms Market Overview and Statistics Report
The Maldives boasts an efficient, up to date telecommunications system. Through the recent efforts of long-time monopoly telco, Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun Pvt Ltd (Dhiraagu), there is now full telephone service coverage of the archipelago. Dhiraagu is a joint venture between the Government of the Maldives (65%) and Cable & Wireless plc (UK) with 35%. As well as its fixed-line network, the company also operates a GSM mobile service and was, until recently, the country’s sole licensed ISP. By early 2006, a second mobile operator was launching a national service. This report provides an overview of the country’s telecom sector, together with some pertinent statistics.
