Internet and Telecommunications Markets in Hong Kong

Hong Kong - Broadband Market Report
The extensive roll out of its sophisticated telecommunications infrastructure has allowed Hong Kong to move quickly in providing more than 90% of all households with access to broadband connectivity. Despite this, the take up of broadband services got off to a slow start. It is only in the last few years that there has been any serious embracing of the services on offer. A boom in broadband access is underway and by mid-2004, there were about 1.4 million broadband subscribers, representing about 60% of the total Internet subscriber base. This Paul Budde report describes the way the broadband market is growing and looks at the major players.

Hong Kong - Broadcasting Report
Television is a substantial market in Hong Kong, with an estimated customer base of almost 2.2 million households (99%). There are up to 38 domestic and regional TV channels broadcasting in a range of languages, including five free-to-air commercial channels, 30 pay TV channels and a variety of Free-to-Air (FTA) satellite channels. Hong Kong, however, had been largely unsuccessful to bring competition to its pay TV market, which had been dominated by i-Cable Communications. The advent of ADSL-based TV services was starting to change all this, however. This Paul Budde report provides an overview of the Hong Kong TV market and the major players.

Hong Kong - E-Services Market Report
The development of e-commerce in Hong Kong has been strongly supported by government policy and legislation, as well as by the strong general development of Internet services. There are signs that e-commerce is starting to grow rapidly, particularly in the area of online banking and financial services. Of particular significance has been the adoption of the Electronic Transaction Ordinance in January 2000. This legislation allowed for the widespread application of digital signatures, with electronic records and digital signatures being given the same legal status as paper-based counterparts. This Paul Budde report looks at the overall e-commerce market in Hong Kong and the way in which it is developing.

Hong Kong - Fixed Network Operators
The very liberal telecommunications sector in Hong Kong has seen the licensing of a large number of operators in a variety of market categories. The licensing process has started to stabilise as both the local and international telecoms markets sort themselves out. The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) has worked particularly hard to achieve a fully liberalised FTNS market for Hong Kong, with the final step in this process judged to have been taken in January 2003. This Paul Budde report provides an overview of the main players in the Hong Kong market.

Hong Kong - Internet Report
Hong Kong has been experiencing rapid growth in its Internet market. The speed of its expansion was highlighted in the first half of 2001, when Hong Kong had the highest rate of growth in the world for household Internet penetration. There were more than 4 million Internet users in the territory, gaining access using either dial-up or broadband by early 2005. And broadband Internet subscriptions had well and truly surpassed dial-up subscriptions by end-2004, with broadband continuing to grow. From just one ISP in 1990, there were 188 by early 2005, with a big jump in issued licences having occurred in 2000. This report provides statistics and other information on the Hong Kong Internet market.

Hong Kong - Mobile Communications - Major Operators Report
Hong Kong has six mobile operators in a crowded market, which has continued to remain competitive by a willingness amongst the operators to restructure. The number of operators has dropped from eight to six through a series of company acquisitions. Competition was also given a real boost with the introduction of mobile number portability service in 1999. The vibrant market has been supported by the efforts being made by the operators to value-add to their service offerings. By January 2005, mobile penetration had reached a remarkable 118%. This report provides details of the players in the Hong Kong mobile market and also provides some relevant statistical information on these operators.

Hong Kong - Mobile Communications Market Overview
Growth in Hong Kong’s mobile phone market has been continuing at a pace. By early 2005, penetration had reached 118%. This penetration level put Hong Kong clearly into first place in the Asian mobile market (ahead of previous leader, Taiwan). Competition in the mobile sector was given a real boost with the introduction of number portability in 1999. With an adult population of 5.9 million, the market has moved close to saturation and the opportunities for further significant growth may be starting to shrink. This report provides details of Hong Kong’s dynamic mobile market and takes a look at what Hong Kong is doing with its roll-out of Third Generation services.

Hong Kong - Telecommunications Infrastructure Report
Consistent with its status as one of the leading telecommunications economies in the world, Hong Kong has built itself world-class telecom infrastructure. Digitalised since 1995, the Special Administrative Region has been wired with almost 400,000km of optical fibre, with the vast majority of households covered by this extensive broadband network. The roll-out has been characterised by the utilisation of practically every type of technology. Hong Kong is naturally a key regional telecommunications hub and as such is the landing point for a significant number of strategically important submarine cables. This report reviews the infrastructure established in Hong Kong.
