How to Build, Upload
and Host Your Own Web Site
By Enrique De Argaez,
webmaster
Web sites are simply servers
connected to the Internet. On Web sites, you can publish Web
pages in a format called HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language).
Anyone with a computer connected to the Internet can view Web
pages using a program called a browser. There are several
available, most browsers are free, such as Microsoft Internet
Explorer, AOL/Netscape Navigator, Opera browser, or the
new Firefox browser.
Web sites can also be use to send and receive email over the
Internet. Thunderbird is the new email program from the Mozilla Foundation
that you can install on your hard disk.
The easiest way to create a Web page is to use a Web
authoring-tool, also called an HTML-authoring tool. Many
commercial programs are available. The two most famous
being: FrontPage, which is available for purchase from Microsoft,
and Dreamweaver, which is available for purchase from Macromedia.
These tools write the HTML code for you as you compose your page.
Using them is similar to using a word processor such as Microsoft
Word. A well known free authoring tool is Composer, available from Netscape.
As an alternative, you can create Web pages by writing the HTML
code yourself in a text editor program such as Notepad, or better
yet using HTML-Kit a full featured free editor program for building HTML
web pages. Pointers to learning HTML include Writing HTML: A tutorial for creating Web
pages, CNET Web Builder, HTML Goodies, Web Style Guide, and W3C HTML
Homepage.

Writing for the Web
by Jakob Nielsen, PJ Schemenaur, and
Jonathan Fox at Sun Microsystems, Kevin Werbach's Bare Bones Guide to HTML , Web Reference. For checking and fixing raw HTML into effective web
pages, see Doctor HTML.
If you already own a domain, you can purchase your own hosting service. If
this is your case, log in to the Control Panel or Site
Administrator interface, then go to the Quick-start guide in the
online Help for more information about publishing (uploading) Web
pages to your site.
Here are some free (and safe) programs that you will find
useful:

SiteUptime

and notifies you if it becomes unavailable.
